“The Changing Light”

“Changing Light” is the first movement of the “Winter Solstice Miniatures” – a cello and piano duet composed by Ryan Marvel and Heidi Mausbach. The pieces were originally performed for Off the Hook Arts’ Winterfest 2019 “Keys of Winter” concert.

Recorded at Coupe Studios in Boulder, Colorado this August, the trio of pieces are a contemplative experience. They touch on the growth, rest, and peace that the winter months encourage.

The sheet music for “The Changing Light” and the entirety of “The Winter Solstice Miniatures” is available at ryanmarvel.com or at Boomer Music in Fort Collins, Colorado.

The other two movements of “The Winter Solstice Miniatures” will be released on all streaming services and here on the OtHArts’ Alcove on November 13th and December 11th.

“Overwhelm”

In the spirit of “We Shall Overcome”, this piece is about rising above injustice and walking forward being your best self. As you will see in the video, the left hand continually crosses over the right hand, always rising. This represents the effort to live with integrity and compassion, no matter what.

In this time of cruel headlines and vitriol and negativity that has the potential to do harm, we should attempt to overwhelm hatred and cowardice with love and light. Overwhelm darkness and injustice with compassion. It takes strength and courage, no question… but it is important to not give power to voices filled with rage that are rooted in insecurity, false judgement or fear.

Tell your own story. Love, listen and be your best self.
