This is the time of the year to think about others. All the non-profits out there will tell you that as many times as you’ll let them. Did you help someone this year? Did you raise the level of humanity and empathy in our community? It’s one of the biggest gifts you can make at any time of the year. Not just at the holidays. And some of you even chose to support our music education programming this year, for which we are eternally grateful. We couldn’t sustain and continue to grow to reach our goals without you — the part of this hugely generous community that cares about the success of all its members, youth and adults alike.
We just wanted to say thank you, for helping us make the climb toward our fundraising goal. There’s still time to join all of those savvy people who support music’s positive effect on learning, personal growth and community awareness. We could exceed our wildest dreams in our fundraising totals at this end of year fundraising with your help still.
But the most exciting thing that happened to us this month is that we raised the level of sophistication in our donation program. We were approached with the gift of stock! A truly foreign world to me that I knew little about but thought, how hard could it be to open a brokerage account? Famous last words! After much muzak listening and legalese, I’m proud to announce, they were not successful in discouraging me. We are quite equipped for the job now. I know more about it than you probably care to but I thought I’d pass along a few gems of information about what I learned. ……Please don’t tell me if you already knew. I’d love to feel some small sense of victory!
Here are the two key advantages:
• Any long-term appreciated securities with unrealized gains (meaning they were purchased over a year ago, and have a current value greater than their original cost) may be donated to a public charity and a tax deduction taken for the full fair market value of the securities — up to 30% of the donor’s adjusted gross income.
• Since the securities are donated rather than sold, capital gains taxes from selling the securities no longer apply. The more appreciation the securities have, the greater the tax savings will be.

It’s the most cost-free, painless way to go and makes a significant impact on us in ways we can’t even tell yet. Be part of the magic!
“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.”
