Balsa Wood Violins
June 20 @ 8:00 am - 11:00 pm
Are you interested in making music or MAKING INSTRUMENTS? Off the Hook Arts, in collaboration with Poudre School District’s STEM Summer Camp Program, presents an instrument building class with support from professional violin luthiers and accomplished woodworkers.
Have you ever wanted to build your own musical instrument? Do you like working with your hands using a variety of old world and modern tools? If so, this hands-on class is the one for you. Students will construct a violin using traditional luthier tools, materials and techniques, plus tools used in balsa-wood construction. By the end of the class, you will have constructed a lightweight violin that is easy to play and has a beautiful sound. There will be a demonstration performance to share on Friday of the second week.
Students taking this class and building their violins will be working with traditional hardwoods, horsehide glue, and non-traditional softwood (Balsa) and cyano glues. Power tools will be limited to a belt/disc sander and drill press.
Hand tools consist of exacto knives, pliers, scissors, handsaws, templates, bending iron, glue pot and brush, chisels, files, sandpaper, calipers, rulers, (metric and standard), clamps, scrapers, peg hole reamer and peg shapers.
There also includes a large amount of “elbow grease”!
The instructors will guide them step by step and as the violins start to take shape the excitement will be contagious. The end product will be a balsawood violin that plays easily and sounds great. The students can be proud of building their own violin all by hand.
