Are you interested in making music or MAKING INSTRUMENTS? Off the Hook Arts, in collaboration with Poudre School District’s STEM Summer Camp Program, presents an instrument building class with support from professional violin luthiers and accomplished woodworkers.
Balsa Wood Violin is a mornings only, two-week offering where students will actually learn how to MAKE a working violin using traditional violin-making tools and balsa wood building techniques. The primary activity will be making the body of the instrument with external bracing; some components (like the fingerboard and strings) will be pre-manufactured, and the neck will be sculpted from a solid piece of maple. This course is available to upper elementary students and above.
Playable instruments will be exhibited at the June 24th Little Shop of Physics mini-festival at the CSU Lory Student Center Ballrooms.
Led by: Michael Schaefer, Director and craftsman; Mary Klass, Bob Kreutz, Clarence Sitzman, Mike Viney, craftsmen; Lee Kupersmith, master luthier
If additional time is needed, instructors are available for supervised work time the week of June 18 – 22nd, 8:00 – 11:00am at Blevins Middle School, 2101 South Taft Hill Road, Fort Collins, CO 80526.
