Alice Ivy-Pemberton

Alice Ivy Pemberton - Off the Hook Arts SummerFest 2020

Violin

Praised by the New York Times for her “sweet-toned playing,” violinist Alice Ivy-Pemberton studied with Nurit Pacht at the Kaufman Music Center in New York for ten years before continuing her studies at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Itzhak Perlman and Catherine Cho. At age ten, she performed as a soloist as well as together with Gil Shaham playing Bach’s Double Concerto on the PBS series "From the Top: Live from Carnegie Hall."

In 2010 Alice was the youngest to compete in the Menuhin Competition in Oslo where she was selected as one of eight finalists. She has won numerous concerto competitions, including those of the New York Chamber Players, Sound Symphony, Ensemble 212, and Greenwich Village Orchestra. The Conservatoire Américain de Fontainebleau awarded Alice its prestigious Prix du Directeur in 2016; she also took the audience prize at the Conservatoire’s Prix Ravel competition. In 2018, Alice won The Juilliard School’s Concerto Competition and performed John Corigliano’s Red Violin Concerto at Alice Tully Hall in celebration of the composer's 80th birthday. Later that year, she played the world premiere of Juilliard composer Marc Migó’s Nocturne for violin, piano, and orchestra, again at Alice Tully Hall and led by Maestro Jeffrey Milarsky.

In April of 2019, Alice made her debut on The Perlman Music Program’s Stires-Stark Alumni Recital Series. She has performed as a soloist in many venues in New York City, including Zankel Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, and the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage of Carnegie Hall. An avid chamber musician, Alice has participated in numerous chamber music festivals including The Perlman Music Program’s Chamber Music Workshop and [email protected]’s renowned International Program. Alice received her Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School in May of 2019 as a recipient of both a Kovner Fellowship and a Benzaquen Career Advancement Grant, in recognition of “tremendous talent, promise, creativity, and potential to make a significant impact in the performing arts."

A passionate advocate for the arts' ability to impact societal change, Alice has sought to promote justice and equality through fundraising, community engagement, and creative collaborations throughout her career. Alice's most recent project, an audiovisual work entitled Drowning Monuments, brings together five newly-commissioned pieces for solo violin by Juilliard composers, each reflecting a part of New York City that will be severely threatened by climate change before the end of the century. In the fall of 2019, Alice received The McGraw Family Robert Sherman Award for Music Education and Community Outreach, which is awarded annually to a Juilliard alumnus.

Written, directed, and performed by Juilliard violinist and native New Yorker Alice Ivy-Pemberton, "Drowning Monuments" brings together five newly-commissioned pieces for solo violin by Juilliard composers Jordyn Gallinek, Marc Migó, Iván Enrique Rodríguez, Jonathan Cziner, and Sam Wu, each reflecting a site in the five boroughs of New York City that will be severely threatened by climate change and rising sea levels before the end of the century. Realized with the stunning visuals of Tel Aviv and New York-based video artist Hinda Weiss, "Drowning Monuments" seeks to draw attention to the urgency of our climate crisis and the imperative of our moment through the medium of artistic collaboration.
